Recorded at A&R Studios, New York City on December 21, 1960. Original album released as Atlantic SD-1364, September 1961. "First Take" was originally released on "Twins", Atlantic SD-1588, October 1971.

The full title on the cover is "Free Jazz - A Collective Improvisation By The Ornette Coleman Double Quartet". The spine of the CD only mentions Ornette Coleman as artist without the Double Quartet added.
