Notes for the 2013 version:
Stanley Crouch conceived the idea of recording Joe Henderson in a trio context at the Village Vanguard in 1985, not as an hommage to Sonny Rollins's 1957 Blue Note album in the same setting, but as a challenge to give Joe more freedom and push him to greater heights. And it worked magnificently. Joe is absolutely brilliant on both volumes recorded that week. The second volume features some of the more interesting tunes that Stanley and I suggested for recording such as Monk's "Boo Boo's Birthday" and Mingus's "Portrait." When we asked Joe what Horace Silver tune he'd like to do, he selected "Soulville" from an earlier era rather than any of the tunes introduced when he was in Horace's band. - Michael Cuscuna
