Notes

Lily May Ledford led the Coon Creek Girls, the first all-woman string band in radio, to fame in the late thirties and forties. With her hard-driving clawhammer banjo and deep soulful vocals, she is known as one of the first and foremost banjo pickin' girls. After a long career in radio, Lily May re-emerged in the late sixties as a solo performer of considerable power. Her master storytelling and traditional banjo, fiddle and singing earned her a National Heritage Award in 1985, This recording documents her work from1968-1983.
