Notes
This tape has been organized into 12 'phrases' within which excerpts have been sequenced mostly by means of cross-fades. The 'phrase' groups, each consisting of 18 or fewer excerpts, have not been sequenced chronologically; nor have they been thematized according to their function at The Music Gallery (festivals, residencies, radio broadcasts, etc.), nor according to type of presentation (live vs. tape, performance art vs. concert, solo vs. group, composed vs. improvised, 'professional' vs. amateur). Because we were more interested in the common threads in the production and experience of the music itself, the sequences have been structured to hilight a spectrum of elements and attitudes common among the many and varied artists who have presented their work at The Music Gallery.Realizing that the creation of a neutral document was neither possible or desirable, we have tried, in composing the sequences of excerpts and segments, to stay as close as possible both to the character of those excerpts involved and to the general spirit of The Music Gallery.
We regret having left out many of our most esteemed musicians and composers from this short compilation. Though we wished that this tape would reflect the strongly international character of the Music Gallery's ongoing productions, we have emphasized Canadian music since there is so much of it that is unknown outside Canada. The tape is composed of 139 excerpts which represent the work of approximately 500 performers recorded live in concert at The Music Gallery between 1976 and 1985.
(Notes for track B45) - Since the members of the CCMC are both the creators of the Music Gallery as well as its 'house band' they have consistently been the Gallery's most prolific performers. They have, over the course of the almost 1,000 concerts at home and abroad, archived approximately 5.5 million seconds, or 6.5 million hearbeats of music. These concerts originated from over 9.5 countries in and around those parts of the world which have, over the past two or three decades, demonstrated a high level of tolerance for this sort of thing. The editing of this 'history' is therefore designed to give the impression of a high-speed travelogue through the last decade in a manner not too inconsistent with the hyperactive experimental aesthetic of the group.
They would like like to thank all those persons who have shown them kindness, a good time, the way out of town, the nearest bathroom, and sympathetic support for the reasonableness of their artistic folly. They would also, breaking for a moment with the tradition of acknowledgement, like to express their own tolerance for those who still forget that all artists of the past have always been, of necessity, contemporaries in their own time.
