Notes

NOTE:

Catalog # R 40003 on front cover, SR 40003 elsewhere

Recorded by Melodiya in the U.S.S.R. Manufactured in the U.S.A. for Angel by Capitol Records, Inc. Performed by Moscow Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. Conducted by David Oistrach.

From back cover center rectangle:

... Capitol Records has now entered into a recording agreement with Mezhdunarodanya Kniga (MK), official State recording agency of the Soviet Union. Capital will issue the finest recordings from MK's "Melodiya" label in a new series, to be known as "Melodiya/Angel." Mastered, pressed and packaged in the United States through the widely acclaimed facilities of Angel Records, these new recordings will, for the first time in history, constitute a systematic documentation of contemporary Soviet musical
life.

SUB-GENRES:

Recommend deletion of "Contemporary" as a sub-genre, since it best applies to works of the later 20th-century beginning with the post-1945 Avant-garde.

"Modern" is a more-inclusive sub-genre applicable to all works after Late Romantic and Impressionist musics. But they overlap, such that a recent "Contemporary" composer may be writing "modern" works in a "Post-Romantic" or "Impressionist" style.

Stylistically, Prokofiev is more conservative (and less-"Contemporary") than most other composers of similar life-spans.
